چکیده

We extend our earlier work on X-ray source stacking in the deep XMM-Newton observation of the Lockman Hole, to the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field North and the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field South. The XMM-Newton work showed the resolved fraction of the X-ray background to be ∼ 80-100 per cent at . 2 keV but this decreased to only ∼ 50 per cent above ∼ 8 keV. The CDF-N and CDF-S probe deeper, and are able to fill-in some of the missing fraction in the 4-6 keV range, but the resolved fraction in the 6-8 keV band remains only ∼ 60 per cent, confirming the trend seen with XMM-Newton. The missing X-ray background component has a spectral shape that is consistent with a population of highly obscured AGN at redshifts ∼ 0.5–1.5 and with absorption column densities of ∼ 10–10 cm.

Can the unresolved X-ray background be explained by emission from the optically-detected faint galaxies of the GOODS project?

The emission from individual X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Fields and XMM-Newton Lockman Hole shows that almost half of the hard X-ray background above 6 keV is unresolved and implies the existence of a missing population of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). We have stacked the 0.5–8 keV X-ray emission from optical sources in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS; ...

Exploring the Early Universe with Xmm - Newton

The question of the X-ray background has been largely settled over the last 10 years using the ROSAT satellite. About 70-80 % of the soft X-ray background was resolved into discrete sources, which are mainly X-ray and optically unobscured AGNs (Quasars, Sy1). Furthermore we found already several obscured AGNs in deep ROSAT surveys, which are predicted by the population synthesis models for the ...

XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATIONS OF RED AGNs

XMM-Newton spectra of five red 2MASS active galactic nuclei (AGNs), selected from a sample observed by Chandra to be relatively X-ray bright and to cover a range of hardness ratios, confirm the presence of substantial absorbing material in three sources with optical classifications ranging from type 1 to type 2. A flat (hard) powerlaw continuum is observed in the other two. The combination of X...

Radio observations of the XMM - Newton / Chandra 13 hr deep survey field

Our VLA observations of the XMM-Newton/Chandra 13hr deep survey field (see Page et al., this proceedings) result in one of the two deepest 1.4GHz radio maps ever made. Within the 15′ radius field covered by the deep X-ray data (0.19 deg), a total of 556 radio sources are detected, down to a 4σ flux limit of 28μJy. Of the 214 Chandra sources, 55 have radio counterparts. The sub-arcsecond accurac...

X-ray and optical properties of X-ray sources in the 13hr XMM-Newton/Chandra deep survey

The 13hr XMM-Newton/Chandra deep survey is the first of two extremely deep XMM-Newton fields observed by the XMM-OM consortium. A 120 ks Chandra mosaic, covering 0.2 deg, provides sensitive, confusion-free point source detection with sub-arcsecond positions, while the 200 ks XMM-Newton observation provides high quality X-ray spectroscopy over the same sky area. We have optical spectroscopic ide...
